Dorothy is a lively orphan who spends her days on her aunt and uncle's modest farm, in the middle of the flat, gray expanse of Kansas. Her only companion is Toto , her faithful dog. One day, however, a cyclone of unprecedented violence arrives, destroying the farm and sweeping it away, along with the little girl and her dog. When the cyclone once again sets the house on the ground, Dorothy steps out the door and sees a wonderful world open up before her, completely different from gray Kansas. Yet her only thought is to reach her aunt and uncle as soon as possible, who are worried about her. Helping her are a Scarecrow , longing for a brain, a Tin Woodman , longing for a heart, and a Cowardly Lion , longing for the courage everyone attributes to him. The four friends will experience a whirlwind of adventures as they travel through extraordinary places populated by equally bizarre creatures and men. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a triumph of imagination, inventiveness, humor, and a love of fun, and has rightly been called by critics the greatest American fairy tale. The work is presented here in its full version and the text is enriched by the evocative images by W.W. Denslow, those present in the first American edition of 1900.
