Henley was born in poverty at the foot of the Southern Pennines. His father, an alcoholic, left home when Henley was six years old. He was educated by his mother and at a small local school where he began to write. He became an apprentice lithographer, but had to leave after two years because he had become involved in trade unionism. Henley's career as a poet began with his first volume of verse published in 1872. The Works of Henley is a collection of poems by poet and critic Henley. These poems were originally published in the volumes "Lyra Elegantiae" (1875) and "Verses" (1887). This edition is based on the 1913 edition of the poems.
