Arvin Gibson has filled numerous teaching and service positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has been a bishop, a counselor in a Stake Presidency, a High Counselor, an Elder's Quorum President, and a teacher of numerous classes. Arvin graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the University of California. He took post-graduate courses in engineering and management. For many years he worked and performed research in the field of nuclear engineering. He then joined Utah Power and Light Company where he eventually became an Executive Vice President. Arvin met his wife, Carol, at the LDS Institute of Religion at the University of California in Berkeley and they were married in 1950. They are the parents of four children and have twelve grandchildren. Arvin and Carol have both performed extensive research in the field of near-death experiences.
