In June 1884, Thomas and Elizabeth McKinlay and their two young children Duncan and Elizabeth (Bessie) sailed from the Port of Glasgow, Scotland, arriving into the Port of Montreal 12 days later. Over the coming months, they stayed with Elizabeth's cousins, the Camerons of the Bass Lake area west of Orillia, Ontario. In February 1885, they purchased 100 acres at the south-half of Lot 13, Concession 6, Collingwood Township, Grey County, Ontario, and named their new home Silver Springs Farm. Here Thomas and Elizabeth lived out the remainder of their lives, building a more substantial log home and barn, and raising their children Duncan, Bessie, and Margaret (Maggie). (Their eldest child, "Wee Archie" died in November 1883 and is buried east of the Village of Gartocharn in the Kilmaronock cemetery, Dumbartonshire, a short distance from High Duncryne Farm where the McKinlays had farmed.) Thomas and Elizabeth contributed to the growth and richness of the Sixth Line Community. Their three children married into the local James, Johnson and Gould families. The family attended the morning worship at Banks Presbyterian Church (which joined the United Church in 1925) on the 4th Concession of Collingwood Township. Both Thomas and Elizabeth are buried in the Banks Church Cemetery. Their family and succeeding generations attended the local Rock Union Sabbath School on Sunday afternoons. Duncan, Bessie and Maggie attended the Sixth Line School (S. S. # 6). as did the children of both Duncan and Bessie. Maggie's children attended the Ravenna School (S.S. # 3). This book honours the memory of Thomas and Elizabeth McKinlay and their foresight and courage to leave behind their Scottish homeland to seek new and better opportunities in Canada for their children and thus for us, their descendants.
