Thunder Bay Mayors & Councillors, 1873-1945 is a meticulously assembled biographical and genealogical reference to the people who shaped local government at the Lakehead-covering Shuniah, Neebing, Port Arthur, and Fort William before their amalgamation into the City of Thunder Bay. Conceived as a tool for political and social history rather than a narrative chronicle, the volume pairs an electoral history of the four municipal corporations with a biographical dictionary of office-holders. Built for researchers, genealogists, and informed readers, the book gathers 414 concise biographies, statistical tables, and an index to support serious inquiry. It also addresses the limits and realities of the era-openly noting, for example, that no women were elected mayor or councillor between 1873 and 1945, while documenting women's public roles where records exist-so readers can approach the material with clarity about historical exclusions and context. Born in Fort William in 1940, Brent Scollie studied at Queen's University (B.A. Hons, English & French) and the University of Toronto (B.L.S., M.L.S.). His professional career included teaching in Thunder Bay and academic and public service roles with Lakehead University, the National Library of Canada, and Natural Resources Canada. A contributor to the Dictionary of Canadian Biography and a long-time member of the TBHMS editorial committee, Scollie spent a decade researching and compiling the 414 biographies included here. Cathy Chapin co-created the municipal and ward maps that support the electoral and biographical sections, providing clear visual context for the period's changing jurisdictions. Curator and Acting Director of the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society during production, Dr. Tronrud designed the CD-ROM edition, formatted contents, researched and scanned photographs, designed boundary maps, and created the cover and page layout.
