“Tidal Water” describes the history of the Herring River in Wellfleet, Massachusetts.  The book provides an overview of the post-glacial formation of the Herring River valley to modern initiatives to restore tidal flow and salt marsh to the River’s estuary.  The book features some of the important ecology, people, and events that frame the history of this important waterway, which flows from Wellfleet’s famous kettle ponds and Truro uplands into Wellfleet Harbor. About the Authors John W. Portnoy, Ph.D. holds degrees in biology, wildlife biology and marine ecology. He worked for the National Park Service for nearly thirty years as an ecologist at Cape Cod National Seashore, where his research focused on the effects of tide restrictions on salt marshes including the Herring River. Studies ranged from water chemistry to mosquito breeding ecology to wetland biogeochemical cycling, and were applied to the restoration of diked and drained salt marshes on outer Cape Cod. He lives in Wellfleet. Alice M. Iacuessa worked thirty years as an international educator in Germany, Venezuela, and England. In England she taught for twenty-one years at The American School in London and served as Social Studies Department Chair. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Herring River, the Wellfleet Marina Advisory Committee, and volunteers at the Cape Cod National Seashore. She lives in Wellfleet and London, England. Barbara A. Brennessel, Ph.D. is Professor Emerita of Biology at Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. Her recent research is focused on the Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin). She wrote “Diamonds in the Marsh: A Natural History of the Diamondback Terrapin.” She also served on the Wellfleet’s Shellfish Advisory Board, and wrote “Good Tidings: The History and Ecology of Shellfish Aquaculture in the Northeast.” Inspired by her volunteer work for Friends of Herring River in Wellfleet, she wrote “The Alewives’ Tale: The Life History and Ecology of River Herring in the Northeast,” and a book for children, “The Adventures of Allie the Alewife.” She lives in Wellfleet.
