Born into a family with a storied military history, Frederick Hamilton "Rick" Hauck seemed destined from an early age for the career he held as a naval combat and test pilot as well as executive officer of a Navy squadron. But the course of his life and legacy changed when he applied to be a NASA astronaut candidate and, after an arduous interview process, became one of the "TFNGs" -- the legendary class of future shuttle astronauts who arrived at Johnson Space Center in early 1978. Rick would go on to fly three space shuttle missions, each with its own unique historical significance, bringing further acclaim to the U.S. space program with each one. This is the story of Captain Rick Hauck's journeys -- both the journeys into space and the personal journey that led him from a little boy drawn to the thrill of roller coasters to a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend who never lost his affinity for adventure.
