The Smoky Hill River is actually a shortcut between the Missouri River and Denver. The area was coveted by white men for their new stage lines and by Native Americans for the abundant buffalo. Most of the colorful characters of the day passed through here. This is the story of the conflict that resulted when two cultures clashed. " Trails of the Smoky Hill is a rip-roaring account of a portion of the Old West from the time of Coronado to the time of the cowboy." Broox Sledge, The Neshoba Democrat (Broox Sledge The Neshoba Democrat ) --The Neshoba Democrat Wayne Lee lives on the farm near Lamar, Nebraska, where he was born. A farmer until 1951 then a rural mail carrier until 1977, writing had to be just a spare time hobby. Now he is writing full time. Mr. Lee taught creative writing courses in adult education in several locations, including Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado, and Christian Writers and Editors Conference in Green Lake, Wisconsin, and is currently an instructor in the Writer's Digest School. The older one is an ordained minister, preaching in Limestone, Tennessee, and working toward his second Masters degree at Emmanuel School of Theology graduate school in nearby Johnson City. The younger son, with farming in his blood, has moved back to the old homestead and lives close to his parents and works in a fertilizer plant while raising a few hogs on the side.
