After her father's death, she moved to Paris, where she studied piano and singing. She married in 1914 and had a daughter, but her marriage ended in divorce in 1928. Two years later, during a trip to the Middle East, she met the archaeologist Max Mallowan, whom she married that same year; from then on, she spent several months a year in Syria and Iraq, the setting for Come, Tell Me How You Live (Andanzas 50, now also in the Fábula collection) and some of her detective novels, such as Murder in Mesopotamia and They Came to Baghdad . Besides the great success of her famous novels, starting in 1953, she gained fame with the theatrical adaptations of her novels in London's West End. In 1971, she was awarded the distinction of Dame of the British Empire . She died in 1976.
