Throughout history, urban centers have played a vital role in military operations. As such, in war, military operations in urban terrain (MOUT) require a dedicated and specific focus. The principles of maneuver warfare still apply, although require the addition of unique planning considerations to maximize effectiveness. In these lessons, students are introduced to the levels of urban environments (“3-Block War), types of cover, unique planning considerations for the urban environment (ASCOPE), and weapons employment considerations in an urban environment. Students will gain a working knowledge of conducting offensive and defensive operations in an urban environment. Students will gain a working knowledge of the application of patrolling operations in the urban environment, including principles-based tactics, techniques, and procedures for use as a basic reference during execution. Students will gain an understanding of the application of security operations in an urban environment, and will be introduced to theory and planning considerations associated with security operations.
