This book is fiction, as is it's main character Anna, but the setting is based on the author’s memories of real places and events on Washington State’s Hood Canal and on the island of Hawaii. Its theme is family and Anna’s journey to it—how she extricates herself from a troubled one, grows into another living with her grandparents, and creates one of her own.
