Il tarantismo è stato un fenomeno culturale che si è manifestato per sette lunghi secoli in molte aree del Mediterraneo ed in particolare nel Salento fino agli inizi degli anni Settanta, per cui l'interesse verso questo argomento è tuttora vivo e persistono molti i segni non solo materiali di tale sindrome e delle sue inconsuete cure, soprattutto nel mondo delle musiche e delle danze popolari. E se è vero che nella vasta letteratura sul tema ci sono numerosi studi approfonditi che ne trattano, è anche vero che si sentiva la mancanza di un manualetto che potesse guidare alla conoscenza dei primi rudimenti di questa misteriosa sindrome nei suoi elementi essenziali: etimologia, aree di diffusione, sintomi e terapie. Il nostro volume, attraverso un approccio interdisciplinare che intreccia fonti etnografiche, iconografiche ed archivistiche è rivolto sia a chi nutre semplice curiosità riguardo questo fenomeno, sia a chi intenda studiarlo, ma anche ai tanti danzatori e musicisti che amano il mondo delle tradizioni e - perché no? - ai turisti e forestieri. In maniera semplice e, al tempo stesso, documentata, dalla sua consultazione si potranno ricevere risposte sufficienti per cominciare a comprendere cosa sia e cosa abbia rappresentato per il territorio salentino il “mal di taranta” e rimandi bibliografici utili per chi voglia ulteriormente approfondire. Tarantism was a cultural phenomenon that persisted for seven long centuries in many areas of the Mediterranean and especially in Salento, lasting until the early 1970s. For this reason, interest in the subject remains alive today, and many traces - material and otherwise - of this syndrome and its unusual cures still endure, particularly in the world of traditional music and dance. And while the extensive literature on the topic includes numerous in‑depth studies, it is equally true that there has long been a need for a small handbook capable of introducing readers to the basic elements of this mysterious syndrome: its etymology, areas of diffusion, symptoms, and therapies. Through an interdisciplinary approach that weaves together ethnographic, iconographic, and archival sources, our volume is intended for those who are simply curious about the phenomenon, for those who wish to study it, and for the many dancers and musicians who love the world of traditions - and, why not - for tourists and visitors as well.
