It depicts the goddess Venus, having emerged from the sea as an adult woman, arriving at the shore. She stands nude on a large scallop shell, with her hands covering her breasts and pubic area. Her long hair flows down her back and around her body in soft curls. Behind her stands Zephyr, god of the west wind, blowing gently to dry her body with his breath. On either side of them are two female figures: one is Chloris, goddess of flowers; and the other is Aura (or Anemone), goddess of breezes. The painting has been praised for its graceful beauty and its delicate use of color and light to create a sense of harmony between all elements in this classical scene.
