Corporate corruption is a deadly business… As Nikki uncovers a series of mysterious deaths, she is abducted by villains. Can she outsmart her captors and live to tell e tale? It was supposed to be a simple assignment. A straightforward corporate fraud investigation to keep Nikki Garcia’s mind off the never-ending pain of losing her son. Instead, after arriving in Medellín, Colombia, she uncovers corruption that is darker and more dangerous than anyone suspected. Nikki is convinced that general manager Manuel del Campo’s opulent lifestyle is hiding something sinister. Especially when she discovers two accidental company deaths have gone unreported. Somehow, Nikki must gain the trust of those on the inside to find answers, while an offer from a charming doctor in Del Campo’s circle to show her around Medellín is too good to refuse. Except unraveling tightly held secrets comes at a cost, and when another company employee is found dead, Nikki is ordered to retreat to safety. But what her enemies couldn’t possibly know is that this assignment has become personal, and Nikki intends to bring them to justice. Even if trusting the wrong person could prove fatal… Not your run-of-the-mill thriller, but a story with a unique plot and characters that are original and sophisticated. Nikki is a character that will arouse the interest of readers, one who reminds me of the characters in Sidney Sheldon's novels. The narrative is impeccable and Kathryn Lane is deft with the first-person narrative. It is a story with powerful conflicts, escalating swiftly and culminating in a satisfying denouement. Romuald Dzemo, Readers' Favorite Waking Up in Medellin kept me guessing in a genre I'd never even thought about before: the corporate who-done-it. Nikki Garcia is an unlikely Sam Spade: a sexy traveling auditor who accepts no spread sheet at face value as she grapples with high level, mega-money corruption, and her own ghosts. Kathryn Lane has crafted a savvy, engaging character and placed her in fast paced thriller with an edge-of-your-seat finish, and managed at the same time to introduce me to two new worlds: the labyrinthine back room treachery of international business, and the exotic tropical atmosphere of contemporary post-Pablo Escobar Colombia. Did I mention there's a love story? Or is it a story of heartless manipulation? Dr. Cliff Hudder, Texas Institute of Letters member and author of Pretty Enough for You and Splinterville There are so many good guys, bad guys, and many that can go either way that the story moves at lighten speed toward an explosive finish. Ironically, encapsulated within the story, are tidbits of fact and interest that are stories within the story and amazingly they add more spice than seems possible, almost as a breather from the ever-building suspense. Grisham comes to mind, a great story accompanied by teaching another culture, as a comparison to this tale. Robert Selby, screenplay writer, book reviewer, and volunteer at Killer Nashville International Mystery Writers' Conference The story has many strong characters and the supporting cast is a necessary part of the story, however, through-out it really comes down to the two main characters, Nikki and her Doctor. Handsome Colombian men and life-threatening danger were not normally a part of Nikki's auditing job, but this assignment was anything but normal. Despite her emotional wounds, she accepts the challenge as a way to overcome the loss of her young son in a tragic event. In the midst of the male-dominated business world in Colombia, she investigates mismanagement allegations and uncovers a sinister plot involving fraud . . . and possibly murder. She also discovers an attractive man who seems to have feelings for her. As her relationship with him grows deeper, so does the level of danger she finds herself in. When the guns come out, Nikki realizes it will be up to her to find a way to survive . . . but is she up to the task? Waking Up in Medellin by Kathryn Lane is as hard to put down as an unscratched lottery ticket. Nikki Garcia is the accountant version of James Bond.
