Walking with Joseph: A Lenten Devotional Inspired by my experiences in pastoring four different churches: A yoked church in rural Iowa, a suburban church in Johnstown and a small city church in Scranton which is my present pastorate. Throughout these experiences I have come to see how the life of Joseph could be a lesson tool for the churches revitalization and renewal when studied and lessons gleaned which I believe could be a lesson for most churches. This Lent, we journey with Joseph, the husband of Mary a man of quiet obedience, deep trust, and faithful action. Through his life, we are invited into silence, surrender, and steady trust in God’s unfolding purposes. My hope and prayer is that this lessons from Joseph would offer a perfect opportunity to reflect and discern how to go back to where Jesus is the center of the life of our churches The life of Joseph offers a quiet yet profound pathway into the heart of Lent—a season shaped not by spectacle, but by faithful obedience, inner surrender, and costly trust in God. There are five cardinal lessons from the life of Joseph to inspire us during this Lenten journey. The first two are as follows: First, Joseph speaks no recorded words in Scripture. His righteousness is revealed not in speeches but in attentiveness. Again and again, he listens, especially in dreams, and acts (Matthew 1–2). Lent calls us into this same posture: to quiet the noise, attend to God’s voice, and obey even when the path is unclear. Lent is not first about what we give up, but about who we listen to. Second, Jospeh’s life depicts a life of costly obedience. His obedience came at a cost—his reputation, his expectations, his sense of control over the future. He accepts a calling he did not choose and protects a mystery he does not fully understand. Lent invites us into that same relinquishment: releasing control, prestige, and certainty so that God’s purposes may take flesh in us. I hereby welcome you to buy this book and delve into this devotional material to inspire you to deepen your faith and calling as a Christian. In these times we live in, we all need a character like Joseph to learn from and be inspired by his faithful commitment and obedience to God. A Lenten Prayer Inspired by Joseph God of quiet obedience, teach us to listen when you speak softly, to act when the way forward is costly, and to trust when the story remains unfinished. Form in us a faith that does not need recognition, only your presence. Amen!
