"Water Margin" is a long novel created by Shi Nai'an in the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty (most of the existing printed editions are signed by Shi Nai'an or Luo Guanzhong or both). It is the first chapter-based long novel written in vernacular Chinese in Chinese history. The whole book reflects artistically the entire process of the Song Jiang Uprising in Chinese history from occurrence, development to failure through describing the heroic deeds of Liangshan heroes in resisting oppression, the growth of Liangshan Marsh, and their acceptance of amnesty from the Song Dynasty and their battles for the Song Dynasty after being amnestied and finally their demise. It deeply reveals the social roots of the uprising, wholeheartedly praises the resistance struggle of the uprising heroes and their social ideals, and also specifically reveals the inherent historical reasons for the failure of the uprising. "Water Margin" is one of the four great classical novels in China. After its appearance, it has had a huge impact on society and has become a model for Chinese novel creation in later generations. "Water Margin" is the earliest chapter-based novel written in vernacular Chinese in Chinese history. It is widely spread and popular. At the same time, it is also one of the works with epic characteristics in Chinese language and literature and has a profound influence on narrative literature in China and even East Asia.
