The book Water in Art is unique in its kind. Water can be considered as a physical phenomenon, as the vital essence of life, and as a rich inspiration of arts: music, literature, poetry and dance. This work concentrates on water in the Western visual arts, with a focus on the art of Finland where water has a special role and meaning. In the preface a deep review is given to the culture history and mythology of water in various nations´s experiences. Water is an important element in many cosmogonies, traditions and art forms. In many pieces of folklore and legends water is the original element in the creation of the world. It plays a major role in various stories of the humankind, from the Antiquity till today. The pictures show an example from the art history of Finland how painters and sculptors of different centuries have handled the water theme.
