This book of poetry highlights a clearly realistic approach to its many portrayals of people in various, often strenuous, life circumstances. It is not a pretty book, but rather shows how people face different sorts of situations with varying degrees of fortitude and misfortune. The poems are glimpses and little stories about how we walk through life with curiosity and courage as well as foolishness and regrets. The later poems draw more clearly upon the “spiritual matters” from the essays, but there remains too large a gap between life and faith. I have gathered these “people portraits” from twenty years of poems and woven the book into a broad range of examples to allow each person to tell their own story. It is not an easy read, but an honest one nonetheless.
