Gregory Spalding wanted to chronicle the many great events and experiences that occurred during the 20 years where the Pirates went from losers to winners again. He includes photos of his two children on the back running the bases to illustrate how long it took. Carlos, his older son, ran the bases at Three Rivers back in 1998 and the younger son, Willard, ran the bases in 2013. Carlos is now 25 and Willard is 8. So he wishes to celebrate fathers and sons and baseball at the same time. WHEN CLINT GOT THE PIRATES OVER THE HURDLE stands as Greg Spalding's eleventh book. He published his first book, SAILING THE THREE RIVERS TO THE TITLE, back in 1994. His most popular book, THREE RIVERS THAT SPAWNED THE CITY OF CHAMPIONS, celebrates the history of the Pirates and Steelers at Three Rivers Stadium. Spalding lives with his wife Lilly and sons Carlos and Willard in the east suburbs of the City of Champions. Previously he served as the Research Analyst with former Cleveland Indian Tom McGough on the weekly Sportsweek tv show produced by Cornerstone TV and has freelanced several times for Sports Spectrum magazine and other publications. Greg graduated from Penn Hills High School in suburban Pittsburgh and Grove City College in Grove City, Pa. He works as a bilingual insurance rep at CVS Specialty Pharmacy and teaches Spanish part-time at CCAC as a result of the latinos on the 1971 Pirates. Spalding attends Beulah Presbyterian Church where he helps run an adult basketball league and a sports camp.
