There was something on the doormat. Something with big green eyes . . . Winnie and her black cat, Wilbur, are all tucked into bed when, suddenly, Wilbur is woken up by a strange noise. There's a baby dragon at the door! Soon Winnie finds her house filled with breaking bowls, armor clattering down the stairs, puffs of smoke . . . and even clouds of butterflies. What's a witch to do? Kindergarten-Grade 2—When a baby dragon hauls himself in through Winnie the witch's cat's door, smoky chaos ensues, and the mistress of the house must use her magic to control the situation in some unusual ways. Winnie and Wilbur find the baby dragon's mother and settle down for the night—just about the time the sun comes up. One of the best parts of this story is the juxtaposition of the text and illustrations. While Winnie is presented in a fairly straightforward manner in the text, she is much funnier in the illustrations. Her wiry hair is flying, her nightie is rumpled, and her socks and shoes most definitely do not match. Paul uses atmospheric purples and grays in Winnie's mostly black house, and there are fun details all over, including creepy portraits and spider webs. This is a fun addition where the earlier books are popular.— Susan E. Murray, Glendale Public Library, AZ Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. She used to live with a big black cat exactly like Wilbur, but luckily her house was not black. Korky Paul is the illustrator of several children's books, including The Fish Who Could Wish by John Bush and all of the Winnie the Witch books by Valerie Thomas. Winnie the Witch won the Children's Book Award and has been published in over thirty languages. Mr. Paul lives with his wife and two children in Oxford, Britain, but every summer they live it up in Greece. A very funny book for young children!
