Alexander Pope was an 18th-century poet known for his satirical verse and translations of Homer. Born to a linen merchant in London he was barred from attending school due to the Test Acts. Taught to read by his aunt he later admitted to a Catholic school, even though it was illegal. Being driven from London by the anti-Catholic sentiment his family moved to a small estate in Binfield where his education ended.
