There are two very common issues users experience with these units. The first?and most common? are incorrectly wired units. These units are bi-directional (they work both clockwise and counterclockwise). However, if they are not wired correctly (mismatched wiring) the unit will spin, but not charge. It will seem as though the unit is properly operating; however it will only function for a temporarily. At some point the unit will overheat and blow the armature and brushes. This is not due to a faulty unit, but rather incorrect wiring.

The second common failure is the external voltage regulator. When the regulator fails, the starter/generator will overcharge and burn.
